What will your first Aikido class be like?
When you book a class, there will be a senior student assigned to host you, show you round the dojo, introduce you to new friends, and orient you for class. Your host will also assist you with personal coaching during class. Class starts with a brief warm up and mobilisation. Then you will be taught various ways to roll safely and comfortably when you lose your balance. You will be introduced to the fundamentals of causing someone to lose balance, fall or be immobilised through demonstrations by the instructor and one-to-one practice with a more experienced partner who can coach you through these new skills. Practice is collaborative rather than competitive. You will also be introduced to the concepts that make Aikido a unique practice, but one with deep roots in Japan’s culture and philosophy.
