Who practices Aikido?

People just like you! Aikido Auckland Seishinkan’s members come from a wide variety of backgrounds, ages and walks of life. You will be on the mat with people from their teens to their sixties who have been training anywhere from a few weeks to a few decades. The atmosphere is warm and supportive and everyone is keen to share their love of Aikido with you.

How is the Aikido Beginners’ Course structured?

The course starts with a brief introduction to the history, principles and protocols of Aikido. Each class begins with a brief warm-up and mobilisation routine to prepare you for safe and enjoyable training. You will then be introduced to skills to safely manage loss of balance and rolling comfortably on the ground, which are important safety skills that can be readily used outside the dōjō. You will then be paired with a more experienced partner to work on skills for off-balancing, restraining and causing someone to fall to the ground. Practice is collaborative rather than competitive with everyone working together to improve and grow through practicing Aikido.
